# About Friends of NIAAA

Like NIAAA, these groups are concerned with why, when and how people drink; why some people develop alcohol use disorders; how the consequences of harmful drinking affect individuals, their families and society; how alcohol affects the development of young brains and bodies; and how prevention, treatment and recovery programs can be improved.

## Who we are

Friends of NIAAA is dedicated to supporting NIAAA in its work to reduce alcohol-related problems and will highlight and disseminate the findings of NIAAA’s programs and help to develop policies in the areas below:

- Supporting research in a wide range of scientific areas including genetics, neuroscience, epidemiology, end organ damage, health risks and benefits of alcohol consumption, prevention, treatment and recovery
- Coordinating and collaborating with other research institutes and programs on alcohol-related issues
- Collaborating with international, national, state and local entities engaged in alcohol-related work
- Translating and disseminating research findings to health care providers, prevention professionals, researchers, policymakers and the public

Augment

the activities of NIAAA, foster and support the scientific understanding of alcoholism and alcohol abuse and the role of the institute in the creation of research and science that fosters prevention and treatment for excessive drinking across the developmental spectrum from fetus to old age and understanding the unique cellular-molecular actions of alcohol and specific brain pathways that drive excessive drinking and alcoholism.
